21 Hearts: Vivian Bullwinkel and the Nurses of the Vyner Brooke

THEATRE 180

An uplifting, compelling true story of women's strength, love & hope in the face of adversity.

Vivian Bullwinkel was one of 65 Australian nurses who boarded the Vyner Brooke in an attempt to flee the Japanese invasion of Singapore in February, 1942. Bombed by Japanese fighter planes, she and other survivors found their way to Radji Beach on Bangka Island where they surrendered. In one of the most atrocious acts of war crimes in our history, 22 nurses were forced to march into the sea and callously machine gunned. The only survivor and witness, Vivian spent the rest of the war in a prison camp before liberation, and her remaining years fighting for recognition of the bravery of her friends and colleagues; their strength and courage in the face of death sustaining her for the rest of her illustrious life. 21 Hearts relays the resilient Aussie humour displayed by the women in the camp and provides a respectful and authentic voice to those who were silenced, remembering them for who they were and not just for what happened to them.

Company Bio

Our 30 year history of intergenerational storytelling based on oral histories underpins THEATRE 180's mission of GREAT STORIES, WELL TOLD. A proudly Western Australian company with a strong focus on WA stories, we work deep into communities to discover and share the stories which make up the fabric of WA society.

In 2020 we created a new medium of storytelling, bringing together the immediacy of theatre and the visual impact of cinema with the award-winning A.B. Facey's A FORTUNATE LIFE, now up to 138 performances, with multiple WA tours and a QLD season. Our subsequent CinePlay productions SYDNEY II: Lost and Found, The Lighthouse Girl Saga and TAKING LIBERTY have successfully continued to explore this unique genre for Perth metro, outer metro and regional audiences with sold out performances. Our two week season of 21 HEARTS: Vivian Bullwinkel and the Nurses of the Vyner Brooke sold out 2 months prior to opening with a return season already confirmed.

All of our shows are built to tour with agility to perform in a variety of venues from theatres to community centres and Town Halls. We are currently working with the City of Albany on their Bicentenary Commemorations in 2026.
