Mayakeniny with Maatakitj

Boomerang and Spear

Mayakeniny means singing and dancing in Noongar language. Maatakitj (skinny-legs-like-spears) is the name of the song-maker. Sidney Myer Award winning director Kylie Bracknell leads an ensemble of Noongar performers immersing audiences in new songs and dances that embody the creatures and features of Western Australia’s southwest corner and southern coast, Noongar boodjar. Combining the old, new and everlasting, Mayakeniny with Maatakitj shares something unique, grounded and empowering at the community level.

Reviews

‘Maatakitj’s eminently danceable and compelling songs in language mark his rich and evolving culture with driving rhythms and complex tempos and were clearly appreciated by the audience’.
Lisa Lanzi, Stage Whispers

‘Clint, whose great passion is the revitalisation of Noongar language and song, is no mere academic but a charismatic stage performer blessed with the powerful voice and rhetorical and compositional talents to convincingly connect past, present and future’. Will Yeoman, Limelight

‘A clattering of clapsticks and a rush of strings triggered the chant “Bindari”; rhythm, harmony and Maatakitj’s powerful, generous voice painting a folkloric soundscape with overtones of pop’. David Cusworth, The West Australian
