First Nations Focus Toolkit

Policies & Procedures

At WA Showcase 2022, a conversation with First Nations leaders and artists was facilitated. Together, they discussed the current state of the performing arts sector in WA and envisioned a future that better supports and prioritises First Nations voices. A key focus of the conversation was what presenters must do to ensure cultural safety for touring First Nations artists.

From this dialogue, the First Nations Focus Toolkit was created and generously gifted to all delegates at WA Showcase 2022. This marked a commitment by CircuitWest to continue prioritising First Nations artists, producers, and communities across all aspects of its work.

At each WA Showcase since, presenters have shared their experiences using the Toolkit in their venues. The First Nations artists who developed the toolkit have been present throughout, listening, offering feedback, and providing guidance. This ongoing, transparent dialogue ensures that the toolkit’s implementation remains accountable and responsive to the expectations of First Nations communities.
